Summary

LeakDetectAI is an open-source Ethereum security framework designed to detect and measure hidden information leakage from transaction timing, gas usage, signing behavior, execution traces, and cross-chain interactions. It brings AI-driven side-channel analysis and adversarial inference techniques into Ethereum wallets, AI agents, and multi-chain applications, addressing a security gap that conventional exploit-focused tooling often fails to measure. With EF DAO Security funding, we will develop a production-ready CLI/SDK, reproducible public benchmarks and datasets, wallet and agent integrations, and standardized metrics for quantifying leakage and security risk. The project will deliver open-source research and practical tooling that helps Ethereum developers test whether their systems remain secure not only when executed, but also when observed by an adversary.

Why this matters

Ethereum security tools primarily focus on exploitable bugs, but provide limited ways to detect what a system unintentionally reveals through timing, gas usage, signing behavior, execution traces, and cross-chain activity. LeakDetectAI closes this gap by making hidden information leakage measurable through adversarial inference, machine learning, and reproducible security metrics.

Afterwards, developers can test wallets, AI agents, and multi-chain applications against leakage attacks before deployment, quantify the severity of observed leakage, compare mitigations, and reproduce results using shared datasets and benchmarks. This enables security testing based not only on whether a system executes correctly, but also on whether sensitive information can be inferred from its observable behavior.

Open-source and research relationships: LeakDetectAI builds on and extends publicly available research and codebases including AutoSCA, deep-learning side-channel analysis, and AutoML leakage-detection projects; these relationships are technical/open-source rather than ownership or employment relationships. The project has received support through Ethereum ecosystem security funding/QF participation and related open-source research grants; funding is used for open research and development, with code, benchmarks, and datasets intended to remain publicly accessible. Core research repositories include https://github.com/SEC4AI-AI4SEC/autosca-hw-wallet-tester and https://github.com/SEC4AI-AI4SEC/AutoMLQuantILDetect.

Why a grant: what already exists

LeakDetectAI has a substantial head start in research, tooling, experiments, and ecosystem validation. The project builds on 3+ years of open-source security research and existing AI/side-channel analysis codebases, with ongoing work covering Ethereum, Zcash, Tornado Cash, wallets, cross-chain workflows, and P2P/libp2p network behavior. We have already developed automated approaches to detect, measure, reproduce, understand, and mitigate hidden leakage, and have begun building datasets and reproducible experiments.

The funding rationale

The requested grant is for extending and hardening this existing foundation rather than building a security program from scratch. Existing research code, experiments, methodology, datasets, open-source infrastructure, and ecosystem relationships substantially reduce the engineering and research cost of producing the proposed Ethereum-native toolkit and public benchmarks. Grant funding will primarily support integration, validation, reproducibility, dataset development, documentation, security analysis, and open dissemination. This makes the proposed work materially less expensive than commissioning an equivalent program from scratch, while preserving the resulting tooling, benchmarks, and research as open public goods.

In scope

The grant will fund the transition of LeakDetectAI from research prototypes and experiments into reusable, reproducible Ethereum security infrastructure. Concrete deliverables include:

Production-ready LeakDetect CLI/SDK for testing timing, gas, signing, metadata, execution-trace, and network-level leakage.

Ethereum security benchmarks and datasets with reproducible attack/inference experiments covering wallets, AI agents, dApps, and selected cross-chain workflows.

Automated leakage-analysis pipelines that detect, quantify, reproduce, and document potential information leakage using machine learning and adversarial inference.

Standardized security metrics, including Vulnerability Score (VS), Key Recovery Probability (KRP), Information Leakage Rate (ILR), and Stealth Leakage Index (SLI).

Wallet, AI-agent, and ecosystem integrations enabling developers to run leakage tests as part of security evaluation and CI/testing workflows.

P2P/libp2p research extensions covering observable network metadata, timing, peer interactions, routing, and protocol behavior where relevant to Ethereum security.

Public research outputs including technical reports, case studies, documentation, reproducible experiments, datasets where appropriate, and mitigation guidance.

Community validation and dissemination through workshops, security-research collaboration, and open review with Ethereum and P2P contributors.

Funding primarily pays for research and engineering time to complete these integrations, run large-scale experiments, curate and document datasets, validate findings, maintain open-source repositories, and publish reproducible results.

The resulting code, benchmarks, documentation, and research outputs will remain openly accessible so that Ethereum developers and security researchers can independently reproduce and extend the work.

Out of scope

This grant is focused on open-source security research and reusable public infrastructure, not on building a proprietary security product or providing ongoing commercial security services. It deliberately does not include:

Building or operating a custodial wallet, exchange, bridge, or financial application.

Developing offensive tooling intended to steal funds, recover private keys from real users, or facilitate unauthorized attacks.

Guaranteeing that a wallet, protocol, AI agent, or application is “secure” or free from leakage.

Full security audits, penetration-testing engagements, or incident-response services for third parties.

Production deployment or long-term operation of infrastructure on behalf of individual companies.

Closed-source datasets, proprietary detection models, or vendor-specific security products.

Comprehensive coverage of every Ethereum client, wallet, chain, or application during the initial grant period.

Replacing existing formal verification, smart-contract auditing, cryptographic review, or protocol security processes; LeakDetect complements these approaches by focusing specifically on observable information leakage.

Commercial integrations or bespoke engineering work that cannot be reused as open public infrastructure.

The grant also does not assume that every detected signal represents an exploitable vulnerability. The initial objective is to provide reproducible measurement, adversarial analysis, evidence, and mitigation guidance so that researchers and developers can independently assess the significance of observed leakage.

Commitments

License: LeakDetectAI will remain open source, with core code, testing infrastructure, documentation, and reproducible benchmarks released under permissive open-source licenses. Research outputs and datasets will be published openly where licensing, privacy, security, and third-party rights permit.

Maintenance: We commit to maintaining the core repositories after the grant period, reviewing issues and contributions, fixing important bugs, and keeping the tooling usable with supported Ethereum environments. Grant-funded work will be developed in public repositories so that the community can inspect, reproduce, fork, and extend it independently.

Pinned targets: By the end of the grant period, we commit to delivering a usable LeakDetect CLI/SDK, documented leakage-detection workflows, reproducible Ethereum security benchmarks, public datasets where appropriate, standardized leakage metrics, initial wallet/AI-agent integrations, and published technical findings and mitigation guidance. Progress will be tracked through public repositories, releases, benchmarks, documentation, and research reports.

Exceptions: We are not requesting an exception to the open-source commitment. Where datasets contain sensitive information, third-party material, or information that could enable real-world exploitation, we may withhold or transform the affected data and publish reproducible methodologies, derived metrics, sanitized datasets, or equivalent test fixtures instead.

What happens next

If pledgers and donors fully fund this initiative, the team has 15 days to finalize milestone terms and deadlines and they are paid out as they complete the milestones. If it hasn't reached its funding goal but has enough support to qualify for TheDAO's voting round near the end of the year, then the ETHSecurity Badge holders will rank it against the other initiatives and TheDAO Security Fund completes the funding for the top-voted initiatives.

Top-up grant rules included with the submission

This grant tops up work that is already under way. There is no proposal window.

The funding goal on this page is the total project budget. The amount already committed, and by whom, is shown in the header with each backer's logo; this grant raises the remainder.

Completed milestones are marked done with a link to the delivered work. Each remaining milestone carries a target month.

Payments from this grant start only once the earlier milestones have been accepted.

The adoption share is measured against the remainder, not the whole budget: adoption milestones carry at least a third of the goal minus what other backers have committed, and at least $100,000 once that remainder reaches $300,000. When the backers cover the whole goal, no adoption milestone is required.

An independent technical reviewer with no ties to the team, appointed before this grant begins and named in the grant agreement, decides whether each remaining milestone passes or fails. Giveth is not the reviewer unless explicitly named, and Giveth oversees the arrangement so the reviewer stays independent of the team.

Milestone deliveries are reviewed by the technical reviewer and paid within 14 days of acceptance.

If a milestone stalls, the team gets a 21-day deadline to complete it. If they miss it, TheDAO Security Fund can reclaim the unspent funds and put them toward other Ethereum security initiatives.

In some circumstances a grant may be managed by the Ethereum Foundation or another established ecosystem organization, when that is a better fit than Giveth.

Rules v2026-09-17, shown on every initiative of this type.

Funding figures, reviewer information, and target dates reflect the submitted application. Submission does not indicate grant approval or receipt of the remaining funding.
